But, an effective and durable fishing rod could be quite expensive sometimes. However, you do not have to cancel that fishing trip just because.

In this article, we’ll be showing you how to make your first fishing rod. And I’m sure that after you’ve read through this article, you would have figured out how you can make your own fishing rod just in time for you to go on your fishing trip.

That being said, the two most important parts of a fishing rod are the rod and the reel. And the materials you would need to make a fishing rod are a bamboo cane, sewing threads, metal wire, glue, bolts and nuts, transparent glue or nail hardener and the drill machine.

Before we begin, we recommend that you ensure that the bamboo cane you intend to use is a smooth one. This is necessary to avoid any form of injury from the unsmoothed part of the bamboo cane.

How to Make the Rod

Step 1

Get a thin and long piece of plastic or metal material. Place your metal wire below the thin substance and fold both sides of the metal wire like you’re trying to tie a knot; this will form a circular shape.

Step 2

Change the direction of one of the ends of the metal wire so that it is facing upwards. This way, both sides of the metal wire will be facing opposite directions with the circular shape still in place. This should end up looking like a fishing hook with the excess metal wire still on both sides. Now, make two large loops and a smaller one just like that.

Step 3

Take one of the large hooks and place it flat on the bamboo cane. Make sure it is placed not too far from either end of your bamboo stick. Use transparent tape to hold both sides with the excess metal wire to the bamboo cane. Once you’re sure the hook is in place and won’t fall off, use your sewing thread to tie both sides of the hook to the bamboo cane.

Step 4

Repeat the same thing with the other large hook. Place it a few centimeters away from where the first hook is but not directly at the end of the bamboo cane. On both sides, use a sewing thread to tie the excess metal wire of the hook. Make sure it is very tight.

Step 5

Now, pick up the smaller hook. Using a plier, cut off the excess metal wire on one end of the hook and place the hook directly at the end of the bamboo stick. Tie the remaining side of the hook that still has the excess metal wire to the bamboo cane.

Step 6

Apply transparent glue or nail hardener to all the parts tied with the sewing thread to make them stronger and hard to get loose.

Note that the three hooks should all be facing the same direction, that is, none should be facing downwards when the others are facing upwards.

How to Make the Fishing Reel

Since the smaller hook is on one end of the bamboo cane, the reel will be on the other end; but not directly at the end. There should be a little space that’ll later be used as the handle of the fishing rod.

Step 1

Get a small plastic transparent container. Make sure it has a small hole through which a thin object can go through. If there is but there’s another covering on it, you could cut off the covering.

Step 2

Turn the bottom of the container and mark the center. Using a drill machine, make a hole at the bottom of the container – a smaller one compared to the one on top of the container.

Step 3

Get a bamboo cane, one that isn’t as long as the one you used for your rod. Place it on the container to measure. Make sure the bamboo cane is few centimeters longer than the container at the back and in the front before you cut off the remaining part. Do not trash the remaining part as you would need it to make the drag-adjust.

Step 4

After you’ve gotten the measured bamboo cane, trim one end of the bamboo cane to fit the hole on top of the container. Trim the other end of the bamboo cane smaller than the first to fit the hole at the bottom of the container.

Step 5

Take the remaining part of the bamboo cane from earlier and drill a hole the size of the bigger trimmed bamboo cane on one end of it and drill another hole the size of the smaller trimmed bamboo cane on the other end.

Step 6

Place the trimmed bamboo cane into the container; let the smaller trimmed part go in first, into the drilled hole at the bottom. Place the bigger trimmed end of the bamboo cane into the bigger hole on the remaining part of the bamboo cane.

Step 7

For the smaller hole on the other end of the remaining part of the bamboo stick, put a nut that is similar in size into it and drive the nut into another material so it doesn’t pierce you when you want to drag-adjust. At this point, you would have gotten the drag-adjust of the reel.

Step 8

Using your sewing thread, tie a thin plastic container horizontally across where you want to place your reel. To place your reel on the rod, cut out two wooden rectangles and drill two small holes each on both ends.

Step 9

Glue one of the wooden rectangles on the plastic container, facing upwards. Put your made reel under the thin container placed horizontally. Pick up the other wooden rectangle and place it on the glued one; make sure the rod is in between them. Then, use small bolts and nuts to join both ends of the wooden rectangles together.

And there, you’ve made yourself a fishing rod.

News Flash! — A Fishing Rod is Not the Same as a Fishing Pole

There’s a common misconception that fishing rods and fishing poles are the same but they are not. While a fishing rod has several lures and bait systems that can be used while using its reel, a fishing pole has a length of line attached to it that is used mainly for placing bait.

A fishing rod can be used to fish from a distance but fishing poles can rarely be used to fish from a distance. Moreover, fishing rods are more expensive compared to fishing poles.

Making your own fishing rod is not as hard as it seems. The best way to go about it is to get your materials ready, check your schedule to know when you’re free and get on with making your first DIY fishing rod. If there isn’t time, create time and then, pick a day to carry out this task.

Also, you could choose to decorate the bamboo cane of your fishing rod. Maybe you don’t want it looking like bamboo, you could use decorative wraps around it to give it a different look. This is definitely one beautiful thing about making your own fishing rod — you get to customize it the way you want.

Making a fishing rod takes 6-8 hours when you’re not decorating it. However, it takes 8-10 hours when you’re decorating. Either way, trust us that if you do it right, it’ll be all worth it when you decide to go on that fishing trip with your home-made fishing rod.
